Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Specialized Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ

BDD occurs when a person becomes overly focused on one or more perceived flaws in their appearance.

It is common for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) to appear during adolescence and continue into adulthood. These concerns take up a lot of time (more than an hour a day), are hard to control, and can cause significant distress. People with BDD often engage in repetitive behaviors, such as trying to cover up the flaw (camouflaging), constantly comparing themselves to others, checking mirrors, excessive grooming, asking others for reassurance, or even skin picking. Some may also avoid certain people, places, situations, or mirrors altogether to avoid feeling worse. These avoidance behaviors can lead to problems at work, in relationships, or with family and friends.

Treatment – Cognitive Behavior Therapy for BDD

Treatment for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) involves a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In this therapy, you will learn practical tools to help you:

  • Challenge and change negative, self-defeating thoughts about your appearance and self

  • Use mindfulness techniques to stay focused on the present moment and manage distress

  • Practice perceptual retraining to change how you see and focus on your body.

  • Gradually face situations you avoid due to your appearance concerns, while reducing rituals like excessive mirror-checking

  • Examine and question deep-seated beliefs you hold about your appearance and self-worth (core beliefs).

This process is designed to help you develop healthier thoughts and behaviors related to your appearance and improve your overall well-being.
